Book Spotlight – Under the Influence – Wanda B. Campbell

Which five words best describe Under the Influence?
Betrayal, Denial, Redemption, Forgiveness, Love

Can you share one highlight from the book?
“Alexander Bennett Jr., what’s going on?” my mother answered. She was the only person who called me by my full name, usually when I was in trouble. I knew I’d interrupted her favorite game show, Family Feud, but this couldn’t wait. My mother’s infatuation with Steve Harvey would have to wait. My mother needed to know what had happened, and she needed to hear it from me.
With my sore hand, I grabbed the back of my neck. It didn’t freak me out in the least that I’d touched a dead body with the same hand only seconds before. I was too worried about how to tell my mother I’d just murdered her son.

What is the purpose of this book?

The purpose of this book, in addition to demonstrating God’s redeeming power, is to dispel the myth that only women suffer from low self-esteem, rejection, and acceptance.

Are there themes that you find turn up again and again in your work? A common thread?
I am a Christ-follower and a romantic at heart, so all of my novels are written with reconciliation with God and mending broken relationships in mind.

Which character or part of the book was the most fun to write? Which part was the hardest?

Alex was the most fun to write, and also the hardest. This is my first novel written in the first-person. Writing in the first person of a male required me to take on the male perspective. I had to interview several male relatives to try to gain some sort of understanding of how the male mind operates.

Can you tell us something that even your most loyal fans may not know about you?
