Christmas was Pop Pop’s favorite holiday of the year and he enjoyed creating Christmas memories with Alex.
What is the purpose of this book?
My husband, Byron passed away last year. Since Alex is very young, I believe that his memory of Pop Pop will eventually fade. I thought creating this book for him would help to keep Pop Pop’s memory alive for him, at least a little longer. My hope is that he would be able to share some of his memories of Pop Pop with his own children. He will have a copy of the book to do that.
Are there themes that you find turn up again and again in your work? A common thread?
Which character or part of the book was the most fun to write? Which part was the hardest?
The most fun was selecting the pictures I wanted to use as inspiration and seeing the first sample of the images.
Since this is my first children’s book, I wasn’t sure how to get it done. I had ideas of what I wanted. I created a mind map to help me plan it out, and then I reached out to an illustrator, providing pictures of Alex and Pop Pop having their Christmas adventures over different years. The challenge: although the pictures I shared with the illustrator were of Alex at various stages (starting from his second Christmas), I wanted the book to reflect him as a 5 or 6-year-old. The illustrator was able to use the images as inspiration and he did an amazing job of capturing my husband’s likeness as well.
Can you tell us something that even your most loyal fans may not know about you?
I recently moved away from my home of 20 years to be near my daughter’s family. I’m having an amazing time with the kiddos!
