Tell us about your book All Things Considered.
All Things Considered is a short collection of my Poetry and Essays that speak to issues such as Police Brutality, Fatherhood, Black History, Mass Incarceration, and love. The book is designed to raise awareness and spark discussion.
Why did you decide to write it?
I used to write a column called “Consider This”, which I sent to African American Newspapers nationwide. I also had a popular radio show that aired on Sunday mornings called “Consider This.” I just wanted to rekindle my voice in the discussions of today.
What’s the best part of being an author?
The best part of being an author is that you get to say what you want to say, and how you want to say it. Also, I get a kick out of having people read something I wrote, and it sparks something in them.
Who is your favorite character in the book, and why?
I like all of my essays and poetry in this book, but I especially like “Peace Builders Needed: Apply Within.” I am a follower of Dr. Martin Luther King’s principles and steps of non-violent social change. I think this essay captures his view of the world.
What was the hardest part of writing the story?
The hardest part of writing this book in essay form was striking a balance between telling the hard truth and keeping a “Christ-like perspective” in the tradition of Dr. King. As a Black man, I have a lot to be angry about and a lot to be thankful for.
If you were to write a book about your life, what would the title be and why?
The title of my autobiography would be “Precious Memories: Oh How They Linger.” My life has been full of highs and lows. I have very vivid memories of them all. My Precious Memories keep me grounded and humble.
What is something readers would be surprised to know about you?
Readers would be surprised to know that I am a very sensitive person who is prone to cry when listening to old Gospel songs.
What are you currently working on right now?
I am currently working on my next Children’s Book, a new book of poetry and my story as a Poet and Founder of the Writers Wordshop.
Do you have anything else you would like to add?
I plan to write a series of “All Things Considered”, volumes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
