In 1977, Nathaniel Gadsden created The Writers Wordshop, a weekly poetry venue, designed to give Poets and Writers a platform to share their works with the world in a safe & non-threatening environment. The Wordshop is especially geared toward the voice of the liberation writers, who scream for the destruction of Social Injustice.
The Wordshop has provided writing workshops, statewide conferences, publishing opportunities, and access to nationally published writers & poets, along with television & radio exposure for wordsmiths across Central PA. Since 1998, the Writers Wordshop has provided four Poet Laureates to the City of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, starting with its founder Rev. Nathaniel Gadsden.
The Writers Wordshop exists to create a better community through writing, reading, spoken word, and education. The Writers Wordshop strives to destroy the school to prison pipeline, by sending more students to state universities instead of state prisons. The Writers Wordshop has formed partnerships with the Harrisburg Police Athletic League, The Pennsylvania Council On The Arts, State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg NAACP ACT-SO program, Jump Street Inc., Harrisburg Area Community College, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology & Midtown Scholar Bookstore to encourage reading and writing as an alternative to violence and crime.al
