Which five words best describe My 70’s Story?
70s Fun Simple High School
What is the purpose of this book?
Originally written for an anthology entitled, Back in the Day, I thought it was a delightful story to share as a kindle book—a short story. I was amazed at the number of high schoolers who read it and enjoyed the recap of my experience.
I authored this book about my life as a 10th grader in high school. The story shows how different the 70s were when dating. The times were simple and less complex than it is today. For instance, there was no google site to find a person or call. If you wanted to locate someone, they provided you with an address or phone number. There was no privacy at home. Houses had one telephone, and it sat in one location where others in the house could hear every conversation. It’s funny and truthful. The reader goes on a journey with me as I discovered my husband in 10th grade—from my ‘husband to be prayer list,’ to meeting the young man in 10th grade English who later become my husband of 48 years.
Are there themes that you find turn up again and again in your work? A common thread?
This book is nonfiction and when writing nonfiction, I tend to offer transparency and truth.
Which character or part of the book was the most fun to write? Which part was the hardest?
My husband was the most fun, as I found his antics and awkwardness funny. He was a sweet date, but I remember moments when, in his attempts to be respectful, he blundered at keeping it hidden. The fact that he thought he could hide his error was so obvious, it made me laugh inside. Even though I appreciated the respect he showed on our dates.
Can you tell us something that even your most loyal fans may not know about you?
I began my writing career after I retired and published my first book at the age of 64. It is never too late to fulfill your dream.
