Book Spotlight: A Holiday Wish by Rose Jackson-Beavers

What happens when a person who is supposed to guide you is lost herself? Would you continue to forgive someone you loved when they persisted to hurt you repeatedly through the years? Darrius McMillian loves his mother, Adrienne, but after years of hoping she would finally embrace a life of sobriety, he abandoned hope. The hole in his heart he struggled with is now being filled with anger toward his mother.

When Adrienne’s sudden reappearance stirs contention between Darrius and his sister Jacqui, she is pressured to either make a major change or lose her only daughter to a life she hates. Is Adrienne reliable enough to help Jacqui and herself? Is it too late to take the reigns as a parent when she has never embraced this role in the past?

In this sequel to the hit novel, “A Hole in My Heart,” about a young teen finding hope through prayer, “A Holiday Wish” brings back the characters as they experience new stumbling blocks. “A Holiday Wish” offers to encourage those who struggles with the same problems every day, and remind readers there’s always the promise of a solution, as long as you work and pray for it.

• Can you share one highlight from the book?
The Protagonist is excelling in school when his mother leaves treatment to return to her old habits. Darius is frustrated, but this time, her actions will affect her young daughter in unexpected ways. Will God save this family?

• Are there themes that you find turn up again and again in your work?
I didn’t realize that I was teaching people self-love and to do self-care techniques. My basic themes in all my books are mental health issues, such as depression, bi-polar, and substance use.
.

• Which character or part of the book was the most fun to write?
I love writing about Adrienne and her struggles. She had so many layers. She wanted to be clean from drugs, she wanted a healthy family, but she continued to fall into her old ways.

• Can you tell us something that even your most loyal fans may not know about you?
I write poetry and used to recite it to young people.

• Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? I wrote A Holiday wish because readers kept asking me what happened to Darius and his family. Both stories, A Hole in My Heart and A Holiday Wish, are based on real-life events and situations.
