Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi! My name is Kesh Nicole and I am a self-published author from New Orleans La. I love engaging my readers and writing amazing, plot twisting novels!

What do you do when you are not writing?

When I am not writing I am usually reading. Reading is the passion that drew me into writing. I am also a wife and mother to three year old twins!

Do you have a day job as well?

During the day, I am a Special Education teacher.

When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

My first short story was written when I was eight years old. I officially wrote my first novel in August of 2017 and it took me two weeks to write it. I published it in November 2017!

How did you choose the genre you write in?

I love the grime of Urban Fiction. The rawness of the characters catch my attention and locks me in! Because that is typically what I am drawn to that has been the easiest for me to write.

Where do you get your ideas?

My ideas are random. I can be washing dishes after dinner and come up with an idea or having a conversation with a friend and something they say will cause a storyline to pop up. There is no one solid place for my story ideas, they just come to me.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

I experienced it for the first time this year, which is the reason why I haven’t been able to release a novel lately. I don’t want to force anything and I don’t want to put out something my readers won’t love. But I think I’m finally past it. 😁

Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I prefer to just write. I tried an outline a time before and before I knew it I was freestyling. So I prefer to just let it flow.

Is there any author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

I love Deja King, she is my absolute favorite author. The author that made me feel like “I can do this” is Myia White, she’s amazing!

Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?

My hardest challenge when publishing my first book was making sure it was detailed enough. I wanted to make sure I had enough content to engage my reader. I was obsessed with word counts and I struggled terribly with that. Once I finally stopped focusing on that, I wrote an amazing novel!

Who are some of your favorite authors that you feel were influential in your work?

My favorite authors are Deja King, Myia White, Antoinette Sherrell, Criss Carr, TT Dorsett, and Jersey Jones.

What impact have they had on your writing?

They motivate me! They push me to go harder and they are amazing, even though I’m independent they are always there to assist me and answer any questions I may have. Criss, Tt Dorsett, and Jersey are my IndiePEN Sisters and they keep me on my toes, motivated, and focused. I can go to them for ideas and inspiration. They are also very amazing authors!

What is your role in the writing community?

My role in the community is to give my readers an amazing stories and produce great characters. I have no issue with helping aspiring authors and sharing what knowledge I have, but for the most part, I stay to myself and write amazing books!

What is your testimony?

I have always wanted to write. As a young girl, I wrote short stories to pass time. As a teen, I wrote poems as a way of expression. Writing has always been an outlet for me but completing an entire novel seemed impossible. I didn’t know anything about the industry or where to start, so I never tried. In 2017, I lost my cousin suddenly which triggered depression really bad, I needed that outlet that worked for me years ago. I researched what to do and how to do it, and I started writing. Two weeks later, I had my first novel.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

Currently, my biggest achievement has been 7 independent novels, which have all been 5 star reads on Amazon. I know I can only get better.

What projects are you working on at the present?

I am currently working on 3 novels, all are planned for release in 2020! To stay up to date with Kesh Nicole, you can follow me on Instagram at author_kesh_nicole Facebook at Author Kesh Nicole or subscribe to the website at www.keshnicole.com
