Today, I have the pleasure of Author Carmen K. Glenn on my blog. Please help me welcome Carmen to the blog today.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Carmen K. Glenn. I am an avid reader. I have loved books since I was a child the library has always been one of my favorite places. Eighteen years ago I joined one of the Indianapolis Chapters of Go On Girl Book Club. We are a national book club that promotes African American literature.
What do you do when you are not writing?
When I am not writing I am spending time with family or friends. I also spend thirty minutes each day doing cardiovascular exercise, usually walking outside or on a treadmill.
Do you have a day job as well?
Yes I have a day job too. I work for a medical research company.
When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I started seriously writing in 2006. At least that’s when I completed my first novel, Overdrive.
How did you choose the genre you write in?
I am definitely a romantic at heart, which led me to write romance. Also, I have been married for twenty-two years, so I am living my happily ever after. 😊
Where do you get your ideas?
My ideas often come from real life situations that I have experienced or the experiences of my friends and family. At other times, my ideas come from my vivid imagination. Sometimes I dream about the things I want to write.
Do you ever experience writer’s block?
I rarely get writer’s block. Having a book outline helps. I usually know the direction for the book. However, when writer’s block occurs it’s important to walk away from the book and do something relaxing like taking a walk or watching a movie.
Is there any author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
Terry McMillan, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Kimberla Lawson Roby and Walter Mosley have been some of my great influences.
If you had to go back and do it all over, is there any aspect of your novel or getting it published that you would change?
I would not change a thing. I have learned something at every step so it’s all been worth it.
How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?
I market my books with paid advertisement, email blasts to my readers and in person events. I enjoy going out doing speeches and book signings and meeting new readers.
Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
My last novel Love Makes A Woman released late February 2019. It is a timeless story of a teenage love that rekindles more than twenty years later. There are lots of plot twists and turns along the way.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
My first novel, Overdrive, began as my personal story that I decided to fictionalize. Many readers have been able to connect with the characters.
What project are you working on now?
I am working on a new series and I have developed a new character. The project is something completely different for me and I’m considering using a pen name. I released one stand alone novel early this year, Love Makes A Woman and I am considering releasing the first novel in my new series later this year.
