Today I have the pleasure of Author Dana Sanders Hill to be on my blog. Please welcome Dana to my blog.
Can you tell us your name and a little bit about yourself?
My name is Dana Sanders Hill and I’m from New York. I moved to North Carolina with my husband and son in 1998.
What do you do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing or working, I try to exercise at least four times a week, catch up on my favorite TV shows on DVR and watch movies. I also enjoy variety puzzles.
When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I started writing as a teenager. My first romance, Twin of Heat, was published in 2005. My first romantic suspense, ALLEGRA’S SHADOW, is available now on Amazon.
How did you choose the genre you write in?
I was into Nancy Drew Mysteries when I developed a love for reading romance and romantic suspense. When I was 13, a landlord’s girlfriend gave my mom a romance novel. She’s doesn’t read the genre, so she gave it to me.
Where do you get your ideas?
Some of my ideas come from conversations I have with my family. Others come to me from conversations I hear while I’m at the store, the gas station, etc. Sometimes I get ideas while I’m at work or before I fall asleep. Whenever an idea pops up, I either jot them down on my phone or on a sticky note, depending on where I am.
Do you ever experience writer’s block?
I have experienced writers block. Sometimes it lasted for a few months.
Is there any author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
I have to say Deborah Fletcher Mello and Jacquelin Thomas are my greatest influences. Both have taken me under their wing and are talented, prolific authors with great reputations. I want to be like them when I grow up.
If you had to go back and do it all over, is there any aspect of your novel or getting it published that you would change?
If I could go back in time, I would have submitted my first novel to Arabesque.
How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?
As far as marketing, I find that Twitter, Facebook and interviews with bloggers work for me. In the past, I’ve used a website called Earthly Charms, which is good for bookmarks, etc. I also try to attend local book events and intend to go to not-so-local events in the future.
Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
Not yet. I’ve not written anything that I haven’t been able to get published.
Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
WHAT LIES BENEATH is about Trina Carter, a forensic pathologist, who learns that everything she believed about her family is a lie.
Days after her daddy’s funeral, forensic pathologist Trina finds out that 1) Daddy wasn’t her biological father, and 2) Sara, her mentally ill mother, never abandoned her. She was murdered. Her remains are found by lawyer Max Bowman, Trina’s first love. They dated in secret until Max dumped Trina without explanation and left town. The only reason he came back after 13 years is because his domineering father had a stroke. When Trina suspects that her birth father’s hidden identity and Sara’s murder are linked, she starts digging for answers and doesn’t want Max’s help. But he refuses to sit on the sidelines, because Sara’s remains were found his isolated land that he’s turning into a public garden to honor his surrogate grandmother. He wants justice for Sara and to make amends for reluctantly breaking Trina’s heart. As Trina delves into Sara’s past, Max slowly regains her trust, and their long-dormant love resurfaces. But a dark force will kill to keep their secrets, and Trina soon discovers that the truth is what lies beneath.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
I experienced baby blues for a few days after my son was born. WHAT LIES BENEATH shows flashbacks of Sara in the late 1980s and how she suffered from postpartum depression, which is more severe. In the past, mental illness within the Black community was considered shameful and kept a secret. What Sara went through wasn’t properly addressed in this small-town during this time, not the way it is now.
What project are you working on now?
My upcoming book entitled WHAT LIES BENEATH is a romantic suspense located in the fictitious small town of Bowman Point, North Carolina and is linked to ALLEGRA’S SHADOW.
Will you have a new book coming out soon?
WHAT LIES BENEATH will be out in August 2019.
