What do you do when you are not writing?
Normally, what I do when I’m not writing is that I read lots of books, I watch a lot of other speakers and authors videos on how they present their content to their audience.
Do you have a day job as well?
Yes, I do have a day job. I have been legal field since I was 18. Writing was truly God speaking to me. That’s the key when GOD speaks to you. LISTEN!
When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I started writing at the age of 10 or 11 in my journal. I wrote my first book in 1996 and had it published that same year.
How did you choose the genre you write in?
My genre varies but my latest work has been a self-help. My mindset has shifted where I’m writing more books towards helping others move to their next level. All my books are intended to stand alone, but if a reader engages all of them, they will discover a line of faith, determination, and optimism and empowerment for you to move on.
Where do you get your ideas?
My ideas come from somethings I have heard or seen, life experiences, television, newspapers or sometimes magazines articles. It could be just everyday life things that we daily go through the ups, the down, the good, the bad and the ugly. As well as learning how to forgive, forget and move on.
Do you ever experience writer’s block?
Yes, I do experience writer’s block because I am a perfectionist and I want everything to be just right before I release my work. And as well as being a perfectionist I’ve had to deal with fear what would others say about my writing, would they even like my writing or would they understand what I was trying to say.
Do you work with an outline, or just write?
I work with an outline because an outline keeps you in order, it help keeps you organized and focused. Writing down your ideas/thoughts first and then putting them in order keeps the flow of your book in order.
Is there any author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
I have several favorite authors but there were two female authors that I read back to back every day growing up. My favorite two authors included author Phillis Wheatley “The Poems of Phillis Wheatley” and author Maya Angelou “I know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.
Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?
One challenge that I faced was dealing with fear and how I imagined what people would say about my book. I would ask myself questions like, Are you really a writer? Do you know who you are and why you wrote this book? Do you really think people want to hear what you have to say? So, because of fear, I went back into my private place and only wrote to myself.
How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?
Online social media, website, and various types of book promotions.
Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
I have written and completed my first love story/novel. I’m just not sure when I will release it.
Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
I am currently working on an anthology which has not coming out yet but will soon for upcoming and inspiring writing to take a part in and share their story.
